Cloud computing delivers IT resources on demand over a network. Understanding the service models and deployment models is fundamental to the JNCIS-Cloud exam. Each model defines the level of abstraction and management responsibility between provider and consumer.

IP Clos / Spine-Leaf Architecture

Modern data centers use IP Clos (spine-leaf) topology instead of traditional three-tier designs. Every leaf switch connects to every spine switch, providing consistent latency, equal-cost multipathing, and easy horizontal scaling. The underlay uses Layer 3 routing (typically eBGP or OSPF) on every link, eliminating the need for spanning tree. This topology is optimized for east-west traffic patterns common in modern data center workloads.

Underlay Network Design

The underlay provides IP reachability between all VTEP (VXLAN Tunnel Endpoint) addresses, typically the loopback addresses of leaf switches. The underlay routing protocol must support ECMP for optimal traffic distribution across spine switches. Two common approaches are used in Juniper data center fabrics.

Tip: In an eBGP underlay design, each leaf gets a unique AS number and each spine gets a unique AS number. This provides natural loop prevention via AS-PATH. The underlay only needs to advertise loopback addresses (VTEP IPs) and point-to-point link addresses.

VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN)

VXLAN is a network overlay technology that encapsulates Layer 2 Ethernet frames within UDP/IP packets. It enables Layer 2 connectivity across a Layer 3 underlay, overcoming the 4094 VLAN limitation with a 24-bit VNI (VXLAN Network Identifier) supporting over 16 million segments. VXLAN uses UDP destination port 4789. Each VTEP (VXLAN Tunnel Endpoint) encapsulates and decapsulates traffic at the edge of the VXLAN fabric.

Tip: VXLAN adds 50 bytes of overhead (14 outer Ethernet + 20 IP + 8 UDP + 8 VXLAN). The underlay MTU must be at least 1550 bytes (ideally 9216 for jumbo frames) to accommodate the VXLAN overhead without fragmentation. Fragmentation in the underlay severely impacts performance.

EVPN (Ethernet VPN) Control Plane

EVPN provides a BGP-based control plane for VXLAN, replacing the inefficient flood-and-learn mechanism. EVPN uses MP-BGP with address family EVPN (AFI 25, SAFI 70) to distribute MAC and IP address information between VTEPs. This eliminates unnecessary BUM (Broadcast, Unknown Unicast, Multicast) flooding and enables optimal forwarding. EVPN is the industry-standard control plane for data center VXLAN fabrics.

EVPN Routing Models

EVPN Multi-Homing (ESI-LAG)

EVPN supports active-active multi-homing using Ethernet Segment Identifiers (ESI). A server or switch connected to two leaf switches via LAG is assigned an ESI. EVPN Type 1 and Type 4 routes handle aliasing (load balancing to all active links) and Designated Forwarder election (which leaf forwards BUM traffic to avoid duplication). Tip: EVPN-VXLAN is the most heavily tested topic on the JNCIS-Cloud exam. Know all five EVPN route types, especially Type 2 (MAC/IP), Type 3 (BUM handling), and Type 5 (IP prefix routing). Understand the difference between ingress replication and multicast for BUM traffic handling in VXLAN.

Tip: For underlay questions, remember that eBGP underlay uses a unique ASN per device, point-to-point /31 links between spine and leaf, and only advertises loopback addresses. The underlay does not carry any customer/tenant traffic directly.

Tip: Apstra questions focus on concepts rather than CLI commands. Understand the workflow: reference design selection, blueprint creation, resource allocation, device assignment, configuration rendering, deployment, and Day 2 operations with IBA probes. Know that Apstra is multi-vendor and uses a graph database.

Tip: For SD-WAN questions, understand that Juniper SSR uses session-based routing (SVR) which is tunnel-free, unlike traditional SD-WAN solutions that rely on IPsec/GRE tunnels. This is a key differentiator that reduces overhead and improves performance.
