Juniper Security Certification Path

This certification is the entry point for the Juniper Security track, which progresses through JNCIS-SEC (Specialist, JN0-335), JNCIP-SEC (Professional, JN0-336), and JNCIE-SEC (Expert) levels. Security Zones

Security zones are the foundational building block of SRX security architecture. Every interface on an SRX device must be assigned to a security zone before it can pass traffic. Zones define trust boundaries in the network and group interfaces that share the same security requirements. Traffic flowing between different zones is subject to security policies, while traffic within the same zone (intra-zone) can be permitted or denied based on configuration.

Host-Inbound Traffic

Host-inbound traffic controls what services and protocols are allowed to reach the SRX device itself (the junos-host zone) from a given security zone. This is separate from transit traffic that passes through the device. By default, all host-inbound traffic is denied unless explicitly permitted.

Tip: The exam often tests the difference between host-inbound traffic (destined TO the SRX) and transit traffic (passing THROUGH the SRX). If an administrator cannot SSH to the SRX from the trust zone, the issue is likely that SSH is not permitted as host-inbound traffic on the trust zone, not a missing security policy.

Security Policies

Security policies on the SRX are stateful rules that control traffic flow between security zones. They are evaluated in top-down order, and the first matching policy is applied. If no policy matches, the default action is to deny the traffic. Policies are defined with a from-zone, to-zone, match criteria, and action.

Global Policies & Default Policies

Tip: Policy lookup order on SRX: zone-specific policies first, then global policies, then the default policy. The default policy is deny-all. You can change it with set security policies default-policy permit-all, but this is not recommended in production. Always create explicit policies for allowed traffic.

Session-Based Forwarding

The SRX uses session-based (flow-based) packet processing. When the first packet of a new connection matches a permit policy, the SRX creates a session entry in the session table. All subsequent packets belonging to that session, including return traffic, are fast-path forwarded using the session table without re-evaluating security policies. Sessions have configurable idle timeouts; TCP sessions default to 1800 seconds and UDP sessions default to 60 seconds.

NAT Types on SRX

NAT on the SRX Series translates IP addresses and/or ports as packets pass through the device. NAT is processed at different stages of the packet flow depending on the NAT type. Understanding the order of operations and when each NAT type is evaluated relative to security policy lookup is critical for the exam.

Tip: The NAT processing order is critical: Static NAT and Destination NAT are applied BEFORE the security policy lookup, meaning the policy must match the post-NAT (translated) destination address. Source NAT is applied AFTER the policy lookup, so the policy matches the original (pre-NAT) source address. This distinction is one of the most commonly tested concepts.

Source NAT Configuration

Source NAT translates the source IP address of outbound packets. The most common implementation uses interface-based source NAT, which translates the source address to the egress interface's IP address with port address translation (PAT). Alternatively, a pool of addresses can be defined for source NAT.

Destination NAT Configuration

Destination NAT translates the destination IP address and optionally the destination port of inbound packets. It is commonly used for port forwarding, allowing external users to reach internal servers using a public IP address that gets translated to the server's private address.

Tip: When configuring destination NAT, remember that the security policy must reference the translated (post-NAT) destination address and port. In the example above, the security policy must match destination 10.0.0.100 port 8080, not the original 203.0.113.5 port 80.

Static NAT Configuration

Static NAT creates a permanent one-to-one bidirectional mapping between a public IP and a private IP. It is used when a server needs both inbound and outbound communication with the same public address. Unlike destination NAT, static NAT automatically handles both directions.

Understanding the complete packet processing order on the SRX is essential for troubleshooting NAT and policy issues:

1. Packet arrives on ingress interface (zone determined)

IPsec VPN Fundamentals

IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) is a suite of protocols that provides encryption, authentication, and integrity for IP packets.
